ever since this food truck trend took off all over LA/OC, ive always respected and have consistently patronized the originators and pioneers of the street food movement. names like lime truck, kogibbq, coolhaus… to name a few. and im one to hate, so this is where im gonna do some of that hatin’… so! theres nothing like having something primarily underground go mainstream, only for it to get bastardized by those who are only out to make a quick buck. it just takes the elitist fun factor out of the whole movement. its no longer a secret shared amongst the in-crowd… its for everybody. and if youre like me, if its for everybody, it aint cool anymore. kinda like a toyota camry.

this past weekend, i met up with some of my family for what could have been an exciting food truck event held in rancho palos verdes CA… where nearly no trendy food trucks go… except if they got lost or some shit. my brother calls me and tells me he got to the location early… only to find out that there were only a handful of trucks there… i go anyway (they may have been good ones, but i wouldnt have known if i hadnt gone)… to my dismay, i discover that all 5 of the trucks are no-name bandwagon roach-coaches that charged way too much for a mediocre product. i was very very very disappointed and ANGRY – mainly because i was hungry. sure, the trucks were there for a fundraiser… but being relatively unknown and having uber-niche menus, theres no fucking way they could have made any decent money that day. cmon! one of them was an ice cream truck named after a specific type of surfboard. seriously?! really fucking creative. no. the only thing cool about that truck was the refrigeration system keeping the re-labeled dreyer’s ice cream factory overstock from melting. which brings me to my point…

theres so many wack trucks out there trying to make a buck instead of giving the public a unique, quality product, that it just brings a bad name to the whole idea. even corporate chains like taco bell, KFC, and the like are getting into it, which makes it even more difficult to distinguish bullshit from the true gourmet coaches. can you imagine: “oooohhh…. hey! taco bell is now selling korean short rib street tacos…” NO! that shit aint fuckin happening. its not trendy. its not cool. GTFO with that horseshit. apparently, im not the only one who shares these feelings. take for example, Josh Hiller:

Josh Hiller is fed up. As a partner in RoadStoves, the food truck outfitter that helped launch Kogi into the stratosphere, he thinks L.A.’s rapidly expanding new-wave food truck scene is getting out of hand.

the surreal life – LA without cars

being an LA native, i could never imagine what it would be like without cars on the streets and freeways of southern california. that is, until LA County decided they would close one of the busiest stretches of the 405 freeway to rebuild a bridge. never have i seen the streets and freeways so unclogged and flowing so smoothly. it sort of reminded me of the movie – a day without a mexican. granted, the film was fictional and in some ways racist (to the point of making you wonder how it got filmed in the first place), but it conveyed just how much mexican people are as much a part of the culture of Los Angeles. the same goes for cars. you cant have LA without cars – its just not the same! the whole “carmageddon” phenomenon was just so surreal, yet relaxing at the same time because traffic was so light. kinda like when you take a benadryl, full dose, for the first time in a long time… you get drowsy and dreamy-eyed, and things you do dont seem realistic anymore, as youre trying to balance between being awake and being asleep. anyhow, before i ramble on… here’s a take on what it would look like if LA had no cars at all:
